When you study Spanish in Puerto Viejo, the easiest route to our Spanish language school is to fly into the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San José, Costa Rica. Iberia, American Airlines, TACA and Copa Airlines are just a few airlines with services from the United States, South America and Spain. The airport is 20 kilometers (12 miles) from downtown San José. From San José take a direct bus to Puerto Viejo.

By Bus

Take a private or public bus from San Jose to Puerto Viejo. Grayline is a private service that leaves daily from San José and costs around US$27.00. The journey takes between four or five hours.

For a more economic journey take a public bus from the Caribe Terminal in downtown San José for approximately US$7.00, this bus leaves four or five times a day. This is a direct service that takes a pit stop in Límon. The last bus leaves at 4:00 pm, you must make sure you are taking the service to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and not de Sarapiquí.

Transportation in Puerto Viejo

When studying Spanish in Puerto Viejo, you'll see that it is a small beach town and very “walkable”. Getting from beach to beach may require another form of transportation. Buses are not a very reliable source of transportation.

By Taxi

Taxis can be expensive when touring different beaches. A fifteen minute taxi can cost up to US$8.00. It is easiest to find a taxi downtown. They are very knowledgeable about the area but the price should be negotiated before starting the journey.

By Bicycle

As the town is small and beaches are close, bicycles and scooters are a popular form of transportation. On a day off from you Spanish language course in Puerto Viejo, rent a bike for approximately US$5.00 to US$10.00 a day.
